Independence Day

The 4th of July came this year, and Michael and I were empty nesters. Both girls were working at their island camp, Ethan and Bailey were off being adults, and Sam was hanging out with friends. Michael and I were both very, very tired that evening and had crashed out on the couch. It was getting close the when the fireworks were supposed to start, and we strongly considered staying home. Instead we both heaved ourselves of our respective seats, grabbed a couple of chairs and walked down to the park.

Watching all the families run around before the fireworks started made the walk worth it. Everyone was laughing, running, snacking, and having a generally good time. Then the nice couple next to us pointed out we were facing the wrong way. We were facing where the fireworks were going to be lit, but we didn't know that there was a drone show first!

The drones winked, changed colors, changed shapes, and changed intensity. It was so beautiful and so quiet! We were so glad that we had summoned energy to walk to the park as the drones were amazing. We both felt like we were watching the future unfold above us.

After the drones, we enjoyed the standard cacophony of glorious explosive fireworks and packed up as soon as they finished. We scuttled quickly away, hoping to be faster than the crowds that were about to start streaming from the park. We mostly succeeded and headed to our quiet, empty home.
