Quick Photo Shoot

We kept meaning to get professional pictures done, but with one thing and another it never seemed to happen.

So after almost 2 years of indecision, I dressed the kids up, Michael got the camera and we went to Kathryn Albertson Park. Four skinned knees (the same two, twice), 20 minutes, and a long walk later, this is what we got.

The poor knees! She skinned them right when we got there and then again on the way out. It wasn't her best day ever.

This Is the Reason Why...

I can never turn my back on my children. Ever.

Fishing With Grandpa (or a really, really, really long blog post)

Con (Michael's dad) loves to go fishing. He likes to head down to Duck Valley Indian Reservation and he always invites us to go. Michael and I have gone with him a handful of times. Each time I've been in varying stages of pregnancy and I was always miserable. Fresh fish and morning sickness do not go well together. Neither does sleeping on an air mattress that is slowly deflating and being 8 months pregnant. They have not been fun trips. Plus it is usually windy and rainy. But I go because Michael and Con love it.

Then there was this year. The weather was miserable before we got there and it started blowing and raining as we were leaving. But the 2 1/2 days in between were lovely. It got pretty cold at night but the sun was out during the day and the wind didn't blow too hard. It was much nicer than we or the weatherman expected.

The kids love this water pump. When we pulled into the campground it was the first thing the kids looked for. They wanted to play with the pump they played with last year. So here they are. And everyone is smiling because unlike last year nobody hit themselves in the head with the handle.
They also love these concrete tubes. Why are there concrete tubes in the middle of the campground? I have no idea. But they make for excellent climbing.

Grandpa took the kids and I out in the boat for a little fishing. Grace was not happy. Not happy at all. She started fussing as soon as the boat started rocking and started in on full-fledged crying as the boat pulled away from shore. She kept calling for her "Da da!" as she saw him safely standing on the bank.
Fishing is not all it's cracked up to be.She did get happier once Libby caught a fish. She spent the rest of the trip pointing and saying "Dish! Dish!" If you didn't acknowledge her by saying, "Yes, that's a fish," she would keep saying it louder and louder. Then two minutes later she would start the same conversation over again. The next time Grandpa took out the boat we figured we would spare Grace the pain and keep her at camp. She saw Ethan and Libby getting their life jackets, promptly grabbed hers and went around to all the adults thumping her chest and yelling "Dace! DACE! (Grace)" until she got someone to put it on her. She was going to go get a "dish."

I came back from fishing to find a lovely roaring campfire. Ethan told me he made it and I smiled indulgently. Michael then backed him up. This is the fire Ethan built, Michael tweaked minutely, and Ethan lit with one match. Take that Boy Scouts of America!Libby loved to fish, she just didn't enjoy actually catching anything. She told Michael it was because she was afraid the fish were going to bite her, but he assured her it wasn't so. She told me it's because they're creepy. Either way, as soon as she hooks a fish "fishing" has lost its glamor. She's a lot like me that way.
And last but not least: Here is a big man with a little fish. (Michael says size is relative and you have to remember he is a big man and so that is not necessarily a little fish. Just smile and nod - it's what I do.)

Rags

Libby hates to have her hair done. Hates it. Hates it. Hates it. For this very reason Libby has short hair. So I was more than a little surprised when Libby asked me to put her hair in rags. We've done it once before and it looked awful. Awful I tell you. Even by my not very high standards. So this time around I did a quick google search and found out I had been wrapping them all wrong. So I figured out the right way and started putting Libby's hair in rags. Grace was fascinated. She kept giving me rags and pointing to herself saying, "Gace, Gace." So Gace got rags too.

Off to bed with a head full of rags.

And the final product. A head full of cute curls. If my hair weren't so short I would be tempted to do my own. I somehow forgot to get a picture of Grace's curls. She looked pretty cute, too.

Birthday Madness

This last weekend Michael turned 30 and Grace turned 2. It was just too big of a weekend to stay home. So we loaded up the kids, the camping supplies, and the bikes and headed for Bruneau. We set up camp, unloaded our bikes, fixed a flat on Libby's bike and started biking to the dunes. We made it to the edge of the campground before my tube suffered catastrophic failure. One second it was fine the next there was a loud hiss of air. This effectively put an end to our bike rides for this trip. Michael had brought up extra tubes for the kids but not for our bikes. So we loaded everyone in the car and went over to the dunes and the pond. Sadie was in heaven. She would go swimming and then roll in the dirt. Made me glad I gave her a bath before the car ride up.

The next morning the wind was fierce. Grace was horrified by the whole thing. Michael and I were trying to pack up camp and Grace just wanted to be held. The wind was just to much for her. She finally managed to find her happy place. She discovered she could climb in and out of the bike trailer with no assistance to get out of the wind and she didn't get in trouble for it. She had already been forbidden from playing in the van after she locked herself and the keys in it. Thank goodness one of the windows was open a crack and we had a roasting stick to hit the unlock button with.
Sam didn't particularly care for the wind either. He decided sleeping would be the best way to cope. Heidi though this was a great set-up as it meant Michael and I took down her tent as well.

Meanwhile the older kids helped take the tents down. They particularly enjoyed the kite (tent) flying.

After breaking camp we headed of for the dunes. Everyone managed to hike to the top of the small dune. Libby ran up it and the rest of us followed at a much more sedate pace. I wasn't sure Sam and I were going to make it. Thankfully Michael carried Grace up the last 1/2. Yeah, she thinks she's cute. This was Sam after climbing the dunes. The wind covered him with sand even though I took the brunt of it. It was in his hair, around his neck, and even in his ears. I think he feel asleep so he didn't have to deal with it anymore.

After climbing back down Grace crawled into to the back of the van and found the hygiene kit. I guess her teeth felt fuzzy. It must have been all that sand.
